Shadow planets Rahu and Ketu are ever retrograde in their motion. Forever chasing Sun and Moon in order that they might avenge their separation by Sun and Moon after the Churning of the Ocean. With such action, they cause the eclipse of Sun and Moon. As planets, they move through the birth chart and gochara (transit) in backwards – retrograde – moving motion and every 18 months, change signs and their all – important Rahu-Ketu Axis, which has significance for nations and their leadership in particular. They also elicit, by their transit and retrograde motion, changes within the human person. Rahu and Ketu affect all with their transits. During June of 2014, Lord Rahu Bhagavan and Lord Ketu Bhagavan will change signs (peyarchi).
The myth behind the shadow planet Rahu speaks of the demon Swabhanu, who was beheaded after the churning of the Ocean of Milk, where-from the last gift that emerged was amrita, the nectar of immortality. The demons and the gods had agreed to cooperate and churn the ocean of milk in order to receive the precious gifts it possessed. They would take the gifts – but the demons engaged in subterfuge and obtained the last gift – the pot containing the nectar of immortality. The gods, outraged, called to Lord Vishnu for aid. The aid was given in the form of an enchantress who deceived the demons, all but Swabhanu, who took his place among the gods, was found out and subsequently beheaded. The head was known as Rahu, and later, the body was resuscitated and known as Ketu. Forever they seek revenge on the Sun and Moon for snitching (informing to Lord Vishnu) and causing their separation. From time to time, when the Sun and Moon cross the plane of the eliptic, they – Rahu and Ketu “swallow” the Sun and Moon. In this wise we have this sacred narrative showing how eclipses occur with the action of Rahu and Ketu.
Arthava Veda gives the following mantra:
May we get welfare from the planets and Moon. May we get welfare from the Sun as well as Rahu
So we take the sacred narrative given above that the actions of Lord Rahu Bhagavan and Lord Ketu Bhagavan are in fact loka sevanam, actions taken for our welfare on this our home planet, Bhumi Devi. This action of the two shadow planets, causing eclipses, is in fact for our spiritual progress: what is dark must be brought out into the light. What is in our birth chart must be experience, we must do the seva indicated by the 6th house and serve with selfless love, nishkama karma; thus do we multiply love on the Earth as our service reaches the heart of the other, wherein resides as hrudaya vasi, Easwara in the form of God.
Rahu is currently transiting Tula Rasi (the sign of Libra) where it is in Chitra nakshatra. For long time, Rahu was conjunct Saturn and in Swati Nakshatra as was Saturn, which formed a very strong vata condition; vata is air element and affects minds, causing minds to move too fast and make decisions without proper discrimination. Rahu has recently moved to Chitra nakshatra, which is ruled by Mars, and Mars – Rahu were in fact moving toward degree conjunction. Since early March 2014, Mars entered Tula Rasi and soon thereafter moved to retrograde and will return to Virgo for some time. While Venus and Mercury retrograde happen often, Mars retrograde is an action seen only every two years, on average. Degree conjunction of Rahu-Mars will not happen in Libra for some time, and both planets are like to be sandi at this time.
Ketu is currently transiting Mesha rasi (the sign of Aries) in its own nakshatra, Ashwini, the twin healers. As Ketu causes individuals to examine what is causing interruptions within – particularly with emergence of unconscious energy or unknown karmic forces – it is important that individuals look to take actions to complete their inner healing before Lord Ketu Bhagavan changes signs, and changes nakshatra to Revati nakshatra. Revati is sattvic in nature, ruled by Lord Budha – Mercury Bhagavan and will stir up unknown matters from external perspectives and cause external disruption which multiplies discomfort within. It is an important time to seek redress of all uncomfortable matters within. In astrology, planets are the forces; the signs are the fields (kshethra) the forces operate in. Lord Krishna told in Bhagavad Gita: dharmakshetre kurukshetre: the place where right action (dharma) takes place is the place of the human form.
