The Temple

History of the Temple

The historical name of this place is Thiru Nallam. It is believed that this place got submerged and later excavated. Queen Sembian Mahadevi, wife of Chola King Kandarathithan (Grandmother of king Raja Raja Chola), replaced the old brick temple with granite and enlarged it.

There are some stone inscriptions in this temple which date back to the periods of Chola King Kandarathithan, his wife Sembian Mahadevi and their son Uthama Chola. Some of the inscriptions also bear mention of kings Rajarajan, Rajendran, Rajathirajan-I, Rajendran-II, Kulothungan I and III and Rajarajan-III. From these inscriptions it is evident that this temple was maintained by Chola kings for almost two and a half centuries.

  • This is one of the 276 Devara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalams and 34th Shiva Sthalam on the Southern bank of the river Cauveri in Chozha Nadu (Thenkarai).
  • Lord Shiva in this temple is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested).
  • This temple is very popular for the unique Swayambu metal Natarajar – the biggest in the world.
  • This west facing temple has two corridors and its main tower does not have any tiers. In place of the Gopuram, there is a beautiful sculpture depicting Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathy, Vinayakar and Murugan as Vaidyanathaswami.
  • The last consecration ceremony (Maha Kumbabishekam) was held on 29.05.2015 and prior to that on 04.02.2001.

There are Pancha Vinayakas in a single shrine looking like an assembly of Vinayakas. According to scriptures, Nandi the divine Bull of Lord Shiva worshipped here.

The temple is counted as one of the temples built on the banks of River Kaveri.

Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya Occurs on April 22 (or April 23 in other places): The Golden Day of Eternal Success

According to Vedic tradition, there are only a few days every year which are considered to be highly auspicious like this. These are known as abuj muhurta (or muhurat), when any important actions you want to begin will become especially fruitful. One of these days is Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, the “Golden Day of Eternal Success. It is believed that anything you start this day is indestructible and will “turn to gold.” (Akshaya: A = not, and kshaya = destructible).

Guru Chandal Yoga

Chandal doshgam is also known as Guru Chandal Yoga. The guru of the gods, that is, the planet Jupiter or Brihaspati, has a big role in this dosha. Jupiter, the God of wisdom, and Rahu, together form this yoga at this time of Guru Peyarchi to Mesha, where Rahu resides. When Rahu and Jupiter come together then they form Guru Chandal Yoga. Both planets will give dual-drishti upon bhava 5-7-9. If there are graha in 5-7-9, these graha then receive the double-drishti and more expansion-amplification proceeds – that is, effect of Jupiter as multiplier, effects of Rahu as charakaraka, one who will not follow dharma.

  • Rahu is ambition over-leaping itself (as Shakespeare wrote) and ignoring the rules, the boundaries of proper behaviour.
  • Jupiter is awareness of the goals of life, practice of dharma – right action in behaviour, speech and thought
  • Rahu is the great fraud dissatisfied with the state of affairs and seeks any means to raise his or her status higher
  • Jupiter is steadiness in pursuit of learning, application of learning to how we earn our wealth and observance of proper boundaries
  • Rahu hates boundaries and will seek any way to bend the rules including outright fraud (charakaraka), cheating and deceit.
  • Jupiter enjoys the good things of life – in fee simple or large – whatever is possible – and sails down the middle of the river of life, careful of the bunds.

Care must be taken at in this year of Guru Chandala Yoga. Extra effort must be put to follow dharma despite the influence of Rahu to do the opposite.

About Guru Bhagavan – Jupiter

Jupiter is known in Vedic Astrology as Guru – Lord Brihaspati, the teacher and Guru of the Gods, and devas. Once, Jupiter took the form of Mercury, and taught the asuras (demonic people) for ten years. Those who worship Jupiter regularly and sincerely lose their worldly miseries and achieve all their cherished, sacred desires. Jupiter as Guru functions as a guru and removes the darkness within. (This is why it is good to approach Jupiter in his name and form of Guru or Brihaspati in prayer, chant and mantra for Jupiter-Guru-Brihaspathi is merciful and his wisdom is profound.)

Jupiter is watery in constitution (kapha), wears yellow clothes and yellow flowers; his gem is yellow sapphire. A Brahmin, Jupiter knows all the Vedas and is expert in all forms of knowledge. As guru, Jupiter has the highest forms of knowledge, philosophy and spirituality (para vidya) and teaches the sacred paths.

Jupiter is Lord of the body’s fat, of the northeast, rules Thursdays, and the signs of Sagittarius and Pisces. Jupiter is known as the Lord of Worship and as the Guru. He is called Teacher of the Immortals, the Soul, the Advisor, the Lord of Speech, the Golden, the Creator (he is but another form of Brahma) the Compassionate, the Creator of Polity, remover of oppression and the Peaceable. As Guru, one honours one’s own guru by honouring this planet, Jupiter.

If Jupiter is exalted, a man or woman becomes scholarly, learned, specialist in languages, pious and noble. If Jupiter is malefic, a man or woman becomes a poor beggar, reduced to utter poverty.

He grants knowledge of Yoga, Astrology, Vaastu, science and mathematics, and is the giver of wisdom which overcomes obstacles. Jupiter as guru guides us in following dharma (the path of righteousness within and without) for dharma is the basis of the Universe itself. Jupiter indicates such domains of principle as law, religion and philosophy. He is the planet of intelligence.

The Armour of Brihaspati – Jupiter

(Jupiter – Brihaspati is a great benefic, but it causes a lot of problems when it moves to some of the houses, especially first, third, fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth from the Moon. It stays in each house for one year. This Kavacha should be read on all Thursdays during that period to get rid of the problems. Persons who have Jupiter in these houses should contact the undersigned below in order to participate in rituals and offerings designed to alleviate and remove such afflictions.)
