Mahalaya Amavasya is the no moon day in the Tamil month of Purattasi and is considered highly auspicious for performing rituals to the dead such as Shraddha and Tarpana. Mahalaya Patsam from September 30 to Amavasya on Saturday 14 October, Sarva Pitru Amavasya, 27, Purattaasi. Important rituals on the day include performing rites for deceased ancestors in sacred Teerths on riverbank on the Cavery River and also taking a holy dip in sacred rivers and spots. This year, Mahalaya Amavasya puja will be held on Saturday, 14 October in Hastam nakshatra at Kanjanur Lord Agniswarar Temple, Tamil Nadu from 6 am to 5pm.
