Mahalaya Amavasya is the no moon day in the Tamil month of Purattasi and is considered highly auspicious for performing rituals to the dead such as Shraddha and Tarpana. Mahalaya Patcham from September 18 to Amavasya on wednesday 2 October, Sarva Pitru Amavasya, 16, Purattaasi. Important rituals on the day include performing rites for deceased ancestors in sacred Teerths on riverbank on the Cauvery River and also taking a holy dip in sacred rivers and spots. This year, Mahalaya Amavasya puja will be held on Saturday, 2 October in Uthram Nakshatra at Kanjanur Lord Agneeswarar Temple, Tamil Nadu from 6 am to 5pm.
